since i started this blog at the beginning of my self-exploration at circle acres, i have had a tremendous amount of thoughts/theories come through my head when i have had the time enough to stare off and get lost in thought about my surroundings and how i want them to affect me in my day to day routine of life from now on! even though i still haven't had enough time yet in my young life to dismantle all of the ideas of this civilized lifestyle that i was born into, i have come to the point in my life that i want to experience an everyday existence with out the modern day necessities that the peers of mine cling to with such an unknowingly strong apparition. for me the idea of making the time to get to know my neighbor's in my community(young or old) for who they are and what they may or may not know that could contribute to my life face to face, which i feel is way more beneficial to our community who will and can provide the basic needs to sustain a beaming life that is free from the never ending need to know what your friends next update in life will be. so sit back and take along look around where you are reading this and survey your surroundings(at work, coffee shop, alone) and tell me straight to my face that an online community can help feed, teach and nurture this dying generation of bumbling technocrats. well i know it is all fine and dandy to sit around a group of friends and only be looking at your iphone well i want to talk, and i am not going to sit idly by watching you destroy my thoughts of what it is to have a friend after all, so i will be constantly searching for a way to live this fantasy life of mine out from under the radar of something trace coined so beautifully as Uncle TV. but now i am sad to say that i am upping the ante of dismantling the notion that a life on the internet is more satisfying than the one that you are a part of right now even if you dont see it yet, so here's to you Aunt interenet our time was short with you compared to the irreparable damage you have done to my everyday community and its ever changing web of morals. and p.s. your house reeks of stale apathy.

here's some pictures and insight cause thats what you came for, so if you didnt see it coming then you have your blinders still on, but this will actually be my last post while i fight off this depressing fucking disease that has plagued me since i fell into the dial-up lifestyle.

The season is starting to roll in with colors of the various things happening around the farm, the creamy white raw goat milks is flowing from floretta with ease now that Noel has master the milking process which i have to say is quite diffucult cause of her ability to react very suddenly to things. But the milk is great in dumpstered fruit loops and also in my coffee, but the milk will start to taste a little goaty after about three days in the fridge and we learned this valuable lesson after all our coffee was ruined one sad morning. Our potatoes are starting to tower over the rest of the transplants that we are putting into the beds, but it is a beautiful canopy which hopefully will return to us ass loads of delicious potatoes. Just last week we started to transplant all of our plants that we could not sell at the farmers market, which has turned at least our hugelkulture beds into a polyculture in which there are many different plants in one bed to either confuse bugs or act as beneficials to the other plants. Now when people stop by the farm and see these 4 ft. high beds they can truly start to understand why we took so much time to build our beds and not waste fuel in a fucking annoying tiller.

Owning a dog on a farm that is littered with animals of every shape, color and attitude is quite a tremendous stress when it comes to them tearing into the house that built and thought was sturdy, then maliciously ripping each and every bird apart that they can get their stupid paws on. But that is what happened last weekend two days in a row when a neighbors rotweiler stopped by when we were at the farm tour, the fucking dog was still in the house when we got back on sunday and we couldn't figure out wether to shoot it or call animal control. So we just left it in the house till the morning and it fucking escaped, but came back again the next day when we were gone but our neighbor donny captured it and called animal control. Now the owner owes us 22 live guineas, but next time we see a dog we dont know near our animals it is shoot first and ask questions never.

I started a garden in front of the wolves den and i started some of the seeds that i am going to plant in the front window and i have planted a couple of them in the beds but the others need some time, this is going to be my urine power/saving seeds garden so we will see how it all works out. But i do have to say it is pleasing to the eye to walk outside every morning to see some plants that rely on you and only you just sitting there soaking up the sun and enjoying the breeze. So i am calling everyone to start a small garden cause it is easy and delicious, plus we need more people growing there own food or we will all starve soon.

Spring is in the air, and its cold

That madeline is a wild baby goat always crawling through the part of the fence that i put upside down, doing 360 tail grabs off of the playground we set up for her, but the even more magnificent thing that has happened since she was born is that floretta has calmed down her neediness towards us humans.

We have had 7 bardrock laying hens for about two weeks now and they are supplying us with about an average of 3 eggs per day right now so it has cut down the cost of the one grocery item that we actually buy for now, but soon we will never have to buy another carton of eggs again once all 25 chickens start laying those magnificent sources of protein. Noel and i tagged teamed this chicken tractor from some plans that we got online, well actually just by looking at the structure and just going with it. Noel built the yard and i built the house cause he seems to think that my carpentry skills over-powers his, which they might but he is coming up strong with all of the pointers that i shout at him every now and again. But all in all the project looks great and once we get a rain barrel we will set up a gutter system to catch the water from the roof and have it go right to the chickens waterer.
We finally got the first hugelkulture bed finished and planted with some potatoes last week which was nice cause that was a pain to find all of that rotting wood without taking away the vital force of the forest. We also made another one last week cause we have too many potatoes for just one or three, and we tried a different approach for the new one which was not to dig out 6 inches of soil to put the logs in which was a relief for our backs. So now we are going to just have to build a couple of raised beds to house the rest of the potatoes that we have.
<img style="display:block; Even though one of the baby's was a still borne, the runt of the two was still alive and floretta was licking off all of the placenta juice right off her new child Madeline.

So this miraculous event changed the whole plan of the day cause all of us were now so entranced in the wholesome beauty of the new born baby goat, so while noel went of to do some research on the Internet about baby goats cause they had no idea what to do since we were all not aware that floretta was pregnant john cranford and i finished putting the fence up to so that we could keep both goats in the area that they needed to be in and so no dogs could get in to mess with the goats. Even though i think floretta would have handled that situation very well we could take no chances, i was even the one who first put madeline on the tit which was pretty fun cause she was sucking on hair underneath floretta's hair and after a call from noel i tried to the best of by ability to milk floretta but my technique was all wrong so it didn't work. It only took madeline about an hour to start walking with a lot of help from danielle and noel, but after awhile she was able to get up and walk on her own which was a sight to see.

Last sunday was a trip back to the old days for me and the Circe Acres clan cause we set up an outdoor shower harnessing the sun and our modern ingenuity to clean our filthy bodies, for me the lack of a shower had left me dirty as hell for close to 3 weeks so i was in dire need of a refreshing shower. but before i could do that i had to have some clean clothes to go along with a clean body, so the day before i had picked up a old timey washing board and borrowed a clothes plunger from noel and danielle and set out to wash my clothes by hand for the first time in my life. this was a hard task to do cause first off my clothes are disgusting from the clay and my body odor so it took a lot of plunging and three cycles of water to get them clean, then since there clothes wringer was back in Ivanhoe i had to do all that by hand also which was by far the hardest part. Earlier that day while everyone was putting there finishing touches on the outdoor shower, i hung up a clothes line and let me tell you hanging up the clothes to dry was the easiest part of the process, but now i have some clean clothes so all the hard work payed off.

Since everyone in the household has been doing a great job of checking the local dumpsters there has been an abundance of food for us to indulge on, and it has lead to us having a lot more communal dinners as well with a bountiful amount of delicious food to be enjoyed by us all with a side of conversation. it is also great cause someone is always stopping by to check out the farm and even though we have no crops yet we can still feed them a great meal if they are in to eating food that has been liberated from a dumpster, which most of our friends are.

Last week we got some more baby chickens(12 more bardrocks, 3 black australorps) which were as cute as could be cause they were a day old, and i even got to pick the bardrocks up from trace at ECO and listen to them chirp all the way back home and once i got there i got to dip their beaks in water so that they would know how to drink water which is pretty fascinating. But tragedy struck that following saturday when we all left in the morning to go to the grand opening of the new Habitat for Humanity store which was awesome cause i got that washboard and a headlamp, but since it opened at 10 and not 8 like the sign had said we were gone to long and came back to 12 of the baby chicks baked in the greenhouse which was sad cause we had not lost a single animal yet which is very uncommon in the farming world. So after a burial ceremony and whole lot of grief we nurtured the remaining chickens back to health and vowed never to leave the chickens in the greenhouse when it is going to even be close to being warm ever again. But yesterday trace brought 1o more bardrocks back into the flock so even though the pain of losing them is still there it appears to look like we had never lost any at all cause the new chicks are the same age.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://misadventuresofgrayskull.blogspot.com/2009/03/heres-to-giving-up-modern-conveniences.html' title='Here's to giving up modern conveniences! So i don't know why i decided to give myself a stick and poke tattoo the night before even though i knew the consequences of it getting infected while mingling with people in a large quantity who are either more or less dirtier than i was at that time, but i said what the fuck and did it any ways, but i am glad it came out better than most jailhouse tats i've seen. we were probally the only people at that show that left at 7 in the morning to get there, but we wanted to do some exploring at a record show Vinyl Conflict before we went to the venue which opened at 4pm and was slated to have 14 bands playing.
When we first arrived at the venue and were waiting around to find some trouble to get into, Noel had to first prove his masculinity and overall strength by beating me in a arm wrestling competition on some chicken crates that were in the back of the van and he won only because i was off balance, you know.

Probably some of the biggest highlights of the show were the bands and not the generally chaotic nature of these punks who had crowded into this awesome venue which i spent most of my time up top leaning on the balcony with a cigarette, but i would have to say that Appalachian Terror Unit, Critical Issue, and Direct Control which our friend Mike plays drums in. The show lasted until almost 1:30 am and i had already taken a nap in the van missing a few bands cause it was way past my farm bedtime that i have been accustomed too, then we drove to Fredricksburg, Va to stay at Danielle's parents house for the night.
When we awoke and decided to venture out into the suburban mess of a town that we were in to get coffee, there had been talk of maybe doing some day-time dumpstering. So after checking starbuck's dumpster before getting coffee and finding nothing, we headed down to a grocery store i had never heard of called Bloom where we when we open the first dumpster and saw all the fruit and vegetable's for the taking we knew that we had hit pay dirt, and they even had a separate dumpster for bread and other perishables like hotdogs which we didn't take. Even though the day-time dumpstering expedition did have one casualty being in Noel cutting his hand inside the dumpster(dont worry it hasnt fallen off yet), i believe that it was a 100% success. Also it was by far one of the biggest and baddest finds i have ever been part of, and we are still eating off of it 5 days later.
<img style="display:block; When i was first offered this experience i was told no digging or tilling gardening but this type of beds last any where from 25-50 years with little water and great benefits to the soil and other beds adjacent to them, so the digging was well worth it. Mike Slaton who has been helping out on some our various projects sure knows how to find the best rotten wood, we don't have it completely finished yet, but we both left it to come to Wilmington so it will be done the day i get back with much hope.

We started to build a fence to house Floretta like a week before she was set to arrive and it has yet to be finished, granted it is the first fence anyone here had put up and when your dealing with cedar post that you foraged out of the woods it can become quite difficult for novices like ourselves. We only had enough 5 ft square fencing to get around half of the field and had to figure out how to make the 3ft fencing we had seem daunting for the goat to hurdle, and we finally came to the conclusion to utilize the bamboo we have and make horizontal posts between the cedar posts which only came to us after two failed attempts at other methods. But hopefully after a couple more days of working on the fence for a couple hours a day cause that is all we can stand Floretta will have a home to graze on and finally stop baaing while being tied up.

Chicken Hysteria at Circle Acres

Well last week i started on a chicken sled that was going to house the first of 5 Bard Rock chickens we were set to receive, i finished the sled on saturday and the chickens arrived just two days ago. He has redeemed himself by catching, killing and eating his first field mouse which i was very proud cause 80 and him are constantly hunting in the tall grass for them, as of now it is 1-1 in the mouse game that we know of.

These chickens are going to be the backbone of fertilizing and scratching up our fields as we move the sled around the property, but we still cant help going over and checking/playing with them every hour of so cause they are so cute and fluffy and i really cant wait till they start producing some eggs for us to feast on. There are also some one-day old chicks that will be arriving in the next couple of weeks, and we will hopefully be ready and prepared for them.

I also have been sprucing up the ol'e living situation by add a rock patio in front of the door so that we do not track in so much mud when we come and go, i will be extending it in the future when i can find some more flat rocks and time. Well in the next couple of days we should be getting some seeds planted and put in to the greenhouse to start our first crops by next week, so wish us luck.

The first couple of days at Circle Acres

When Noel arrived Monday night i was more than ready to start working even though the sun was setting on the day and i had already done a small amount of work during the day by myself, but none the less i was excited to get started the next morning after Noel filled me in on what we would be trying to accomplish in the next couple of days to get the farm ready for some animals and some quick crops. We awoke on Tuesday morning to some snow that had fallen during the night so we did not get out of the wolves den till around 10:30 cause it was to cold to put together a metal greenhouse, when we finally trudged outside it was right to work on putting together a small greenhouse that Danielle's parents had given them and it was all going well until we started to put the paneling and weather stripping on which was the final step and our hands were cold so it got quite irritating but in the end it got done.

With the greenhouse up and 15-20 degrees warmer than it was outside it was time to start working on the worm box that would house all of the Red wigglers Noel had brought from his old house, even though my carpentry skills were quite rusty we put together a modest worm box that had a forward tilt so that any of the runoff from the worm castings could be caught and used appropriately, we also put a door on the top so that we could play with the worms whenever we wanted to. It was then off to rake leaves in a wooded path onto a piece of black plastic to be put over the ground where the first crops will go to kill the grass and weed growth on the ground, we will also use the leaves for many other sources like composting, layering beds, and to possibly make our own potting soil. Well it looks like the starter crops have been picked and hopefully soon we will have some starting in the greenhouse and then out to the fields to get some crops coming up.

Everyday more and more i am feeling like i could do this for the rest of my life even though its only been a week but maybe that's just my gut talking, but we will see.

First Crop Mob experience

I was pretty excited on Sunday morning when i woke up extra early to fix my self a big breakfast cause i was going to be participating in my first Crop Mob at Wells Branch farm which is two local farms who have joined together, a Crop Mob main goal is to allow people who want to be involved in farming a chance to live out their dreams of helping around a farm if only for a few hours and gives other local farmers a chance to see the different farm operations around town while meeting new and interesting people. When Mike, Trace and I first arrived there were not to many Mobber's and we got started by picking some rocks in a garden which the pigs had tilled up since the last harvest, then it was off on the tour of the over 450 acre grass feed Red Devon cows which are from New Zealand.

After the tour we all split up into different groups cause there was a mountain of work to be done and over 50 people to help out Trace and I both choose the fencing group cause that will need to be going up soon at the farm for the goats and other animals that will be coming soon, so after cleaning up an open shed and picking up the rest of the rocks it was off to eat a delicious lunch with meat from all the pigs and cows. I just decided to wait on eating meat at this particular time and stuck with the yams w/ pecans, collard, grilled vegetables and my favorite Corn bread, so after two big helpings and a full belly we were off to learn how to set up a high tension wire fence. Even though this isn't the type of fencing that we will be utilizing it is good to know where to use bracing and how long to run your wire before using a post was very informational but also pretty boring if you had to fence some 450 acres.

So after all of the fencing fun we could all handle we rode back to the house where everyone had been jamming at since after we finished lunch, they also had some home brew beer that went down right nice after hard day of work and a little bit of standing around in muddy clay which is quite hard to walk in.

Officially Night One in the Wolves Den

This past Saturday I drove up to Noel and Danielle's house at Black River Organic Farm, then it was off to Circle Acres Farm in Siler City but first Noel had to dig out some earthworms for the compost pile at Circle Acres then he showed me how to layer right for the cold(I have my own ways but thanks Noel)and he let me borrow a scarf which I plan on returning the next time I see him. When we all finally got our ducks in a row and got into their van, we started the two and half hour drive to get to Siler City which was a very interesting trip between the adventure to Wal-Mart for a Itrip cause the radio is too much to bear and just listening to what Noel had to say.
When we finally arrived at the farm, I got shown around the farm and the house which is going to be a big project but before I even knew it we were moving again to meet Trace at the Co-op for some delicious dinner and conversation(I was starving and cleaned my plate). Then it was off to the house to keep warm for the rest of the night with a beer for me and everyone else had cheesecake. It was good. The next morning I woke up tired cause borrowing Nick's 15 degree sleeping bag since 3 people and a heater in the Wolves den gets it pretty toasty anyways, but I woke up with Noel around 8 and went outside to chop some wood to heat up Trace's wood stove, we also saw some snow flurries it wasn't much.

When we finally all got hungry enough we went to General Store Cafe to have some of the damn best brunch I have had in a long time, then it was off to ECO where Trace works its a distribution center for organic food around central NC it also house Piedmont Biofuels and an array of farmers. We then ventured on back to the homestead to try and figure out where to erect the greenhouse but it was hard to tell how much sun each potential spot would get cause it was super cloudy, then I just wondered around the rest of the time till it was time to say farewell if only for two weeks time I shall be living in a camper and enjoying the hell out of life for a extended period of time.

Tasting the fruits of my labor..

In late August Sarah and I visited my mom and step dad's vineyard to help them harvest their first year of Merlot grapes, it was suppose to be two days of picking but my step dad did not get the bird netting out in time so the crops yield was not as great as he had hoped. We only pick a little over a ton of grapes with the help of my brother, his friend and some guys that work on a farm nearby, Sarah cut her hand twice with the sharp pruning scissors once in the beginning of the day and then once more to end the day and I cut mine once. But all in all it was a great day of hard work in the fields and I cant wait till August to see what the second year's yield is going to be hopefully it will be in the 4 ton range. Well during the holiday season the vineyard that my step dad sells the grapes too Westbend Vineyards put a holiday wine into production with the grapes that he had harvested stems and all, my mom gave Sarah and I a bottle each of the wine even though Sarah does not drink she did serve it at the Soapbox employee New Years Party and everyone seemed to enjoy the wine except for Katie.

I thoroughly enjoyed that whole night but that is a whole different story. I ended up drinking the other bottle of wine around Nick and Sarah last night after we went to see this horrible horror movie and it was delicious to the last drop especially with a little drop of hard work and blood from Sarah and I. I look forward to doing again in August and maybe I will be able to get more than two bottles of wine out of it, Boy I love wine.

Well in 14 days I will be starting my apprenticeship at
Circle Acres Farm, and of course I am waiting till exactly the last minute to get all of my eggs in the basket cause it seems to me that I have alot of important things to take care of before I leave and start this wonderful journey. Till then, wish me luck. Might have been my second glass but who's counting.

Going back to the start..

Well.. I've been putting in some thought into when my farm apprenticeship ends after the two or so months of hard time, what are going to be my plans after that. Well I know I shouldn't think of it that way but it is always good to have a plan for the ever pushing future, so I think that it would be a good thing to take it back to the start of my very short farming stint as a kid on my grandfathers garden, he never farmed the full potential acreage of his land cause he was retired and prolly just wanted to fucking relax.

Just a bout to the tree line is whe

re that plot stops, if your wondering.

I have talked with a couple of the elders, and my chances are in the weeble wobble stage at this point, but I have some things that I have in my corner like my background in construction and the fact that the house needs some work unless my family is going to let it rot in place. So hopefully we can make a deal for me to stay there in the house while I do some tuning and cleaning up on the old house, I would hate to see the house and land that I spent tons of time at in my childhood go to waste.

So the last part of the plan is where I get to farm the land, that has been sitting idle for 13 years and get the ball rolling to see whether or not I was actually listening during my internship. But that plan lies months and months ahead with a whole lot of meetings on what needs to be done and by who. But if I cant dream about then I would have nothing to do with my day, cause I could also step up the acreage of the land I could in theory farm.(take a look)

Well all and all it was a pretty good holiday season, but not saying that I am going to miss it. But It was good to see family and dream up some plans for the future.

My boots are starting to buckle

Some new updates on the farm excursion that i learned today while standing in the cold with a 1/4 of the committee at the Riverfront Farmers Market this morning, is that i will be living in a lento coming February burr that would be cold. But realistically i will be living in what has come to be known around town as the Wolves den which is a camper that is said to sleep at least 6, but for two short short months it will only be home to me and Brother(my vicious dog(he has a record)) who will be living the high life of a 2 burner stove, possibly 2 space heaters, a mini fridge, and one extension cord that will power my everyday necessities like this thing i am typing on and who knows what else. I also got some insight on the type of farming that i will be helping with, but that information will come later after i read the many books that have been put on my plate for my holiday reading list, which i will be posting soon so watch out cause the one i started today already has me sucked into the life that i will be taking part in. Also hopefully in the next couple of weeks i will be venturing all up in Pittsboro to see what there is to offer for me, and what i have to offer in return also since i have minimal knowledge in a vast amount subjects(so i think). I also got my first taste in a many of years of handling money during a customer transaction, but it just had to be my bitch of a landlord asking what these are and i replied carrots.

Beginning of something old

I told myself sometime ago that i would never start a blog, but look at me now about to finish my first sentence on my shiny new blog. The reason for me starting this and possibly keeping it running for the next couple of months is because I have a golden opportunity to work and live on a organic farm in Pittsboro, NC, the exact coordinates have not yet been given to me by the high committee who governs these 12 beautiful acres of land. That does not concern me at this point in time cause I am in a state of awakening in my life and hopefully when February of next year slowly but surely rolls around, I will be in a different town, a more sound and sustainable community. But most likely just starting to learn how to live life a few steps simpler, cause in the society that i feel like i have grown out of in the last couple of years just maybe now i have found something to bring my perspective of nature and how we can balance our lives around where we live so not to destroy the age old infrastructure of our earth. Well that is all the information i know and can release at this particular time, but maybe soon there will be more.

visit this to see a little bit of the farm as it stands now. Cricketbread
